Role Overview
This role is a great match for an enthusiastic and proactive Quality Inspector with strong experience in CMM programming and precision metrology, ideally gained within highly regulated manufacturing environment.
Reporting directly to the QA/RA Manager, you will act as the department's subject matter expert for metrology and inspection. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining CMM programmes, conducting dimensional inspections using both automated and manual measurement techniques, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives to ensure product quality, compliance, and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Program and operate Mitutoyo CMMs using MCOSMOS and CAT1000D software to inspect precision components. Experience with MiCAT is advantageous; training will be provided.
- Develop and maintain pre-programmed CMM inspection routines in line with Contract Review requirements.
- Perform first-off, in-process and final inspections against engineering drawings, 3D models and GD&T specifications.
- Conduct manual inspections using micrometers, verniers, height gauges, bore gauges and other metrology equipment.
- Produce accurate and detailed inspection reports and maintain complete quality records in accordance with GDP requirements.
- Interpret complex engineering drawings and technical specifications to verify dimensional conformity.
- Support investigations into non-conformances, root cause analysis and corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
- Assist in maintaining compliance with ISO 13485, ISO 9001 and other applicable regulatory requirements.
- Maintain and improve quality systems, procedures, work instructions and documentation.
- Assist with calibration activities and ensure inspection equipment is maintained and calibrated within defined timescales.
- Train and mentor new employees and apprentices in inspection processes and best practices.
- Support and lead continuous improvement initiatives aimed at improving efficiency, reducing non-value-added inspection activities and lowering costs.
- Attend production meetings as deputy for the department and provide updates on inspection workload and priorities.
- Support Production Engineering and other departments in achieving company objectives.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping and safe working practices in accordance with the company's 5S and Health & Safety requirements.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the QA/RA Manager or senior management.
Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in a Quality Inspector, CMM Programmer or Metrology role within precision engineering or medical device manufacturing.
- Strong proficiency in MCOSMOS and practical experience operating Mitutoyo CMM equipment.
- Excellent understanding of GD&T and interpretation of complex engineering drawings and CAD data.
- Skilled in the use of a wide range of manual inspection and measurement equipment.
- Good knowledge of ISO 13485, ISO 9001 and quality management systems within regulated environments.
- Experience with FAIRs, CTQs, NCRs, CAPA, complaints handling and inspection reporting.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and experience of QMS and ERP systems.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills with the ability to work effectively across multiple departments.
- Self-motivated, organised and able to prioritise workloads in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrates a proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.
